Bishop Luers Teacher To Receive Father Tom Light Of Christ Award: News Sentinel

Father Tom Award News SentinelMegan Ryan, a special education teacher at Bishop Luers High School who also is involved in conservation work for bees and other pollinators, is scheduled to be presented with the Father Tom O’Connor Light of Christ Award during a ceremony at noon Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Lafayette Street and Jefferson Boulevard.

In addition to the recognition, Ryan will receive a check for $1,000 for use in her community-service work. The award is sponsored by St. Mary church and the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

This is the 10th and final year for presentation of the award, which honors the legacy of the late Rev. Tom O’Connor, the longtime pastor of St. Mary who died March 17, 2004. O’Connor worked throughout his career to promote social justice, peace and care for the needy, including being a leader in the founding of St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen program, Matthew 25 Health and Dental Clinics, the Christmas Box food distribution and the Bells of St. Mary’s scholarship program for central-city youth.
