Educational Programs FAQ’s

What Should My Child Wear?

  • Appropriate clothing for the outdoors
  • If you will be joining us for the morning sessions, please send a jacket with your child if the mornings are cool.
  • We will be taking a walk through our prairie, this means comfortable shoes and they may get dirty.
  • We recommend long pants instead of shorts.
  • Please be sure to put sunscreen on your child prior to arrival.
  • A hat and sunglasses may be great options to help protect against sunburns and UV rays. We will be outdoors for the entirety of the session. While most of this time will be spent under a tent, there will be time spent in the sun.
  • Please do not have your child wear sandals.

What Should My Child Bring?

  • A Program Packet with a signed waiver for each participant (This is REQUIRED in order to participate). The Program Packet will be emailed to each registrant a week before the class.
  • Ensure your child is in good health, fed and well hydrated.
  • Allow ample time to ensure your child has time to use the bathroom in the clubhouse before the class starts. There will be no designated bathroom breaks and the clubhouse is a considerable distance from the class location.
  • Please do not bring snacks, but a small water bottle is acceptable. We will have water on-site for particularly hot days and emergencies to keep our participants well hydrated.
  • An open mind, ready to learn and have fun!

Can I Buy Honey Or Other Memorabilia?

  • There will be memorabilia items for purchase at the completion of the session
  • We accept cash, debit, and credit cards

What Happens If The Session My Child Is Signed Up For Does Not Meet The Minimum Participant Requirement? 

  • Minimum class size = 6
  • Maximum class size = 20
  • We will notify you if the session does not fill up. We will work with you to find another session that could work for you and your child.

When Should I Arrive?

  • We ask that you arrive 15 minutes before your session begins. This will allow for check-in time.
  • Allow ample time to ensure your child has time to use the bathroom in the clubhouse before the class starts. There will be no designated bathroom breaks and the clubhouse is a considerable distance from the class location.

What Happens If There Is Inclement Weather?

  • We will cross our fingers that this does not happen, but as we operate outdoors, inclement weather is a possibility. Before and throughout the duration of the class, our educators will be monitoring the weather and other factors that may cause a class to be cancelled. In any such case, each registrant will be emailed or called and  may choose to move their child to a later class, retain southwesthoney.com online credit or have class fees returned.

Can Parents Attend The Class?

  • We encourage parents to join us for this enriching and fun experience. Please come enjoy this time with us- we promise that you will have just as much fun as the kids!
  • One free adult per child registered.
  • If there will be more than one adult coming with your child, there is a $5.00 fee for that adult payable on the day of the class.

Does My Child Need A Signed Waiver?

  • Yes! Each participant must have a signed waiver in order to participate in our educational programs.
  • Please notify us of any special considerations for each child, including allergies.

If My Child Is In 3rd Grade, Can They Participate In the K-2nd Grade Session?

  • Yes, this is perfectly acceptable. Please understand that each session is designed to the learning levels of the indicated grade levels. We would not recommend that your child fluctuate into a group that is more than 1 grade level above or below their current grade.

How Long Will Each Session Last?

  • We wish we had all the time in the world but…
    • K-2nd grade: approx. 90 minutes
    • 3rd- 5th grade: approx. 120 minutes
    • 6th-8th grade: approx. 120 minutes
    • High School: approx. 150 minutes

When Should I Pay For The Educational Experience?

  • We ask that you pay online at the time of registration.
  • Unfortunately, we cannot accept walk-up registrations for additional students the day of.

What Happens If I Need To Cancel?

  • We ask for 1 week’s notice prior to the scheduled session you are wishing to cancel in order to guarantee a full refund.
  • We will do our best to work with you to find an alternative session that your child could be rescheduled to attend.

Why Is Education About Honey Bees And Pollinators So Important? 

  • Honey bees are declining at an alarming rate- if this issue is left unaddressed, it could drastically change our world’s ecosystem, agriculture, and food production.
  • Honey bees and other pollinators may be small, but they are mighty- we have a honey bee to thank for 1 out of every 3 bites of food we eat! Education is the key! The more people who become aware of ways they can help pollinators, the better off our environment will be.

Where Do The On-Site Programs Take Place?

  • Programs take place at the beautiful Southwest Conservation Club – 5703 Bluffton Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46819 (View Map). The grounds are home to a plethora of natural wildlife and lovely scenery.
  • All on-site Pollinator Exploration Programs take place under the science tent (you will see this to the left upon entering the Southwest Conservation Club property).
  • Please park in the main parking lot.
